(1) Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your Block Presentation and/or your senior project? Why?

The one thing I'm most proud of in my senior project is the fact I was able to really advance in my own photography and I've grown to love photography more and more.

(2) Questions to Consider

a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your Block Presentation (self-assessment)?

I would give myself a P.

b.     What assessment would you give yourself on your overall senior project (self-assessment)?

Overall I would give myself a P in my senior project.

(3) What worked for you in your senior project?

What worked for me is that I feel that I was able to create some really specific answers for my EQ.

(4) (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would have you done differently to improve your senior project if you could go back in time?

Personally I would've given more time in my research to find more in-depth and focused sources for the future.

(5) Finding Value

How has the senior project been helpful to you in your future endeavors?   Be specific and use examples.

The senior project has given me a sense of direction for myself. Because of my senior project, I have come up with the decision to enlist into the U.S. Navy and hopefully be able to be a photographer for the Navy. My senior project has given me the preparation to really focus on my work while in the Navy because attention to detail is really severe while in the armed forces. As a result, I'm just really thankful to have this experience to end my final year here at Ipoly.

    Interpretive
What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?
The most important thing I've gained from this experience is how important teamwork is for a situation that involves teaching students different skills. The reason being is that if the teacher has a difficult time getting to everyone at once, an effective TA can ease the stress of that.

How has what you’ve done helped you to answer your EQ?  Please explain
Most of my mentor-ship involved a lot of explanation for my answers 1 and 2. My first answer is composition, so I used this year to really get a good review of the different techniques of composition. The ROP class also deals with working with equipment such as reflectors and studio lights along with a DSLR camera. So that helped me out with the importance of a DSLR camera along with neighboring equipment that's necessary for an effective shoot.

Film vs Digital

I just wanted to share some videos about the two rivals of photography and cinematography, film and digital. I always find this debate really wonderful because I get to learn about the experiences of film that I wasn't able to experience at all and I feel researching about film and it's legacy is the next best way to learn about it.

Blog 20- Exit Interview

1) What is your essential question and answers? What is your best answer and why?

My essential question is,
"What is the best way to run a profitable photography studio, whose focus is event and portrait photography?"

My answers are:
1. Employ Composition Techniques within your photos.
2. Having the behind the scenes knowledge of a DSLR camera in order to produce a properly exposed and focused image.
3. Create and implement an effective and efficient business plan in order to stabilize a clientele.

My best answer is, "Create and implement an effective and efficient business plan in order to stabilize a clientele" because although my first two answers are very important for photography, at the end of the day my topic is about creating a business and being able to sustain that business consistently. I also feel that a business plan would be able to help me kick-start a business of my own in the future, so I find it the most important of the three for this situation.

2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?

Well I felt that it was smart to use my first two answers to explain fundamentals of photography considering the fact that most wouldn't necessarily be aware of the bag of tricks photography can have. My next goal was to consider many different factors of business. Factors like ways to run a business, the type of products a business will have, where the business will be located, how one would go about marketing their business, and so many other factors. With all of these overwhelming things to consider, I needed to develop a "starting point" of where all of these factors could meet all at once, and that's how I arrived at creating a business plan to organize my thoughts and to potentially sell my ideas to investors one day.

3) What problems did you face? How did you resolve them?

Honestly the biggest problem is research. It is so difficult to find good research that actually pertains to my topic. So to resolve it, I continue to try to find any reliable and credible research that I can hopefully use whenever I find the time to do so. Another problem could be how I'll actually organize my senior presentation. I have a few ideas, but I still need to create a concrete plan.

4) What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?

I feel that my most significant source has to be, "Entrepreneur's Guide for Successful Business Planning" by Bob Kazmierski. The reason being is that Mr. Kazmierski has more than 10 years of experience of community planning and economic development; and in his article, he created a very strong framework of what a business plan practically needs to look like if a person even thinks about joining a partnership with a well known firm or the investment of a venture capitalist. This article also has a strong influence on my third answer for the fact that all the factors I need to consider are within the article that Kazmierski has wrote.

My second most significant source is my mentor Jack Bohlka. Even though he has been there for me all of my senior experience, my goal however is to make sure my best answer can answer my essential question which is why Jack is my second most significant source. The plus side though is that I can ask him any business advice because he has all of the experience I seek to learn. So Jack is a great reference for both my photography and my future business goals. All in all, Jack is the best person I can go to for research or questions.

EQ
What is the best way to run a profitable photography studio, whose focus is event and portrait photography?

Answer #3 (Write in a complete sentence like a thesis statement)*
Create and implement an effective and efficient business plan in order to stabilize a clientele.

3 details to support the answer (a detail is a fact and an example)
1) There are many different components to consider before even kick starting a business. Ex: Product, Locations, Primary customer, and many others.

2) Any successful company out there has some type of plan to stay organized. Ex: Google, Apple

3) Proper planning ahead of time can lead to a higher quality product. Ex: Any project for Ipoly.

The research source (s) to support your details and answer
The source I used was "Importance of a Business Plan" By Daymond John. He is a top entrepreneur and is well known as the CEO of his clothing company FUBU, and also his appearances on the hit TV show introducing up and coming entrepreneurs, Shark Tank. He discussed the importance of planning for your business. Basing his writing on one quote, "Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail."

Concluding Sentence
There's more to running a business than just saying you're going to start a business. A business plan is a really good way to start a future career as a entrepreneur, so I want to focus on a business plan for my future business.

February Post

Even though i'm a little late for this, I still wanted to show some pictures I took during ROP video production. What we were doing during that week was the pre-production for our Doritos commercials. These photos basically go over different lighting styles that Francisco and I were trying to accomplish to see what would work best for my commercial.

Interview 3

1) What is the best way to run a profitable photography studio whose focus is event and portrait photography?
"You would like to set up shop in a well populated area with a healthy income. And have the ability to develop a good reputation and the ability to promote yourself to your consumer. Hire an accountant, don't overspend."

2) What are some methods to educate yourself for event and portrait photography?
"When I grew up it was usually just learning from other people. I'd say that studying from the masters of photography and reading about how they would take photo. Also just a lot of practice is necessary."

3) What are the best ways to ensure trust into your clientele about your ability?
"Just like any other business, you need to be engaging and always listen to your client's needs. You also definitely need to keep a strong portfolio at all times. Most importantly though you just need to be a good listener."

4) What methods do you use to ensure satisfaction for your client?
"Do what you say you're going to do. If you think you have a grasp as to how long you're going to take for a project, always try to deliver early. Surprise people with a quality product. Also always make your client look good."

5) What methods do you use to produce a high quality product?
"Knowing your tool-set. You don't need to overextend yourself in terms of cost for your equipment, but you need to educate yourself about your equipment. Also with the material you use to actually develop your prints, such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom."

6) Why do you prefer the methods you use?
"I use them because they're familiar and they get the job done."

7) What do you do to create a positive experience for your client?
"Showing up, being on time, being punctual, being observant, just showing to your client that you're always willing to give 110% for them through any situation."

8) Where do you turn to when in need for advice or questions to improve your work?
"Internet, peers, I certainly study the work of others but I try not to emulate their work but there is always something new to learn from someone else. No matter how experienced and well respected you are, there are always new things to learn."

9) How do you determine that a client is satisfied with their purchased product?
"I believe when that client comes back to you a second time. I mean it's pretty straight forward but if they're willing to ask for your work again, then you've nailed it in my opinion."

10) What methods have been proven the most effective in your experience?
"Doing what you say you're going to do. Knowing your tool-set. Delivering quality product at a reasonable price."

Independent Component 2 Approval

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
What I plan to do for my independent component 2 is during March 14th and 15th, I will go to Fullerton College with Ipoly's drama team and I will take photos of basically any and all aspects of Fullerton Festival. The 1st day is 10 hours long and the 2nd is 14 hours long. After the event, I plan on editing each and every photo that I took both days. I will also create a Fullerton Festival poster for the Drama department as a type of advertising piece for future drama recruits.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
I will show each photo I have caught and edited either in a digital or physical portfolio for the senior team to see. I will also log all the hours I completed on my independent component 2 spreadsheet. I also plan on submitting the photos to the organization that is sponsoring the event. Yearbook has also asked me to allow them to use some of my photos for the yearbook this year on one of their spreads.

3.  And explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
For starters, my essential question deals with how to run a studio that has a deep focus in event photography. Other than a baptism, this is the only other real event that I will have the chance to photograph. Since this event also deals with motion, it'll give me a great chance to take advantage of my camera knowledge and composition knowledge. (Motion photography was a trouble for me last year when I was enrolled in the ROP photography class.)

4.  Post a log on the right hand side of your blog near your other logs and call it the independent component 2 log.
Will do!

Blog 13- Lesson 2 Reflection

Content

1. Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your Lesson 2 Presentation and why?
I am most proud with the format and flow of my power-point because during my 1st lesson, many cons for my feedback involved me possibly creating a power-point.

2. Questions to Consider
       a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 2 Presentation (self-assessment)?

        P+/AE-

       b.     Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 2 component contract.

First and for most, I was able to meet all the requirements for P consideration. I'm asking for an AE- because it would just feel nice to stay that I got an AE.

3. What worked for you in your Lesson 2?
I feel that I was able to effectively engage my peers to be interested in my lesson 2.

4.  (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your Lesson 2?
I had a talking time of at least 15 minutes, so I would go back and work on talking less to give more time for my activity.

5. Finding Value
What do you think your answer #2 is going to be?
My possible answer will be, how to effectively set your camera for a great exposure. (Ex. ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed.)

Blog 14- Independent Component 1

Literal:
A) I, Angel Flores affirm that I completed my Independent Component which represents 30 hours of work.

B) The person who helped me complete my 30 hours was my mentor Jack Bolhka.

C) Pittman stated that my mentor-ship hours can also count as my independent component hours as well.

D) What I completed was an assortment of both assisting my mentor for his studio and for his class at iPoly. For his studio, I helped him with clients that may need help in anyway and I was also his "cashier" for a photo-shoot we completed at Alta Loma in December. For his class, I am his TA, since I know the knowledge he currently teaching his students. I help with any photography or Photoshop questions they may have.

Interpretive:
The work I completed is important because the first answer I created revolves around the work I did with my mentor. My first answer involves having the knowledge behind composition and how to actually compose your photos correctly. A main portion of 1st semester's ROP class focused on how to properly compose your photos. With things like if your photo is properly exposed or is it way too dark or light. Or does your photo follow the rule of thirds position rather than it being just in the center of the photo. I enjoyed having this refresher because it reminded me that I need to worry about those questions all the time for my own senior project and photography in general.

P.S. Ironically, I didn't worry about taking pictures for my independent component, which is why I needed to take photos of this week's photo-shop lesson on two tools known as the quick select tool and the quick mask tool.

Applied:

Honestly I feel like half of my answer for the interpretive section should also in implemented in the applied section as well. This work has given me a refresher of the basics that every photographer should already know. Whether its trying to run a studio, or even attempting to get a job as a photographer, the first thing anyone is gonna look at is your portfolio. And the first thing they'll judge is if you can tell a story through your photos, and the only way anyone will ever be able to do that is by knowing the basics. Then manipulating them to your advantage.

1.   Where are you doing your mentorship?
I am currently doing my mentoring at the ROP digital photography class on Mondays and Wednesdays.

2.   Who is your contact?
My contact is the photography teacher Jack Bohlka.

3.   How many total hours have you done (total hours should be reflected in your mentorship log located on the right hand side of your blog like your WB)?
I currently have 60 Hours and 30 minutes of mentor-ship.

4.   Summarize the 10 hours of service you did.
My 10 hours mainly consisted of me helping out my mentor Jack in anyway I possibly could. Such as printing out copies of the assignment for the day, answering any questions that his students may have when he's busy, and also more or less helping out any students who are having a tougher time with either their photography or any problems with Photoshop.

5.   Email your house teacher the name of your contact and their phone number confirming who they should call to verify it.

Blog 10

1) To be quite honest, I didn't really do anything for my senior project over winter vacation. The only productive thing I worked on that could be related to my senior project is properly editing the picture that all of South House took for Mrs. Pittman before our vacation.

2) The most important thing I learned from working on that picture is, that as an editor, you need to always keep in mind about how many people are currently in a specific photo, and the necessary steps who needs to take to make sure everyone who needs to be in that photo is actually in the photo and no one is cut off when you plan to print it.

3) If I were going to ask a 10 question interview about potential answers for my EQ, I would conduct that interview with my mentor Jack Bohlka because he has been running his own photography studio for well over 15 years and has been able to keep a steady revenue throughout the years. Another reason why I would interview him is that his studio solely focuses on portrait and event photography, which is in direct correlation with my senior project.
